Finished reading the 2nd sage of Mistborn for the 2nd time (all 5 books) I don't like it... I don't like it at all! I think the 1st book is one of the worst books I’ve ever read. At the 2nd half of the 2nd book, it becomes more interesting when there is a lot of world building and lore, and this is also the only thing I liked in the 3rd and 5th books. The 4th novella just give background and reasons why the hero from the 1st era should come back to life (in my opinion he shouldn't). In general, I feel like the author wanted to experiment with the magic system so he wrote a piece-of-shit heist novel to see how far he can stretch it (The Alloy of Law). Like he just wanted to have fun but didn't care about writing anything substantial. The sad thing is, that heist novel became successful, and he kept on going this direction with the next 3.5 books. Why didn’t I like it? 1. It sets in an industrial-revolution world, the author said he was inspired by 19th century London, but because he is so American and doesn’t really understand anything but American culture, it turned out to be a mix of western & old New-York with a stupid British/Australian accent. 2. All (and I mean ALL) the characters are copycats of other characters from his other books with different names. There is not 1 original character in all 5 books. 3. The humor is childish and dumb - there is a character that tells stupid jokes in every sentence, but he never tells an actual funny one. I was happy he died at the end of the 5th book. 4. Compared to the 1st trilogy, this one feels cheap and insignificant. there are no big conflicts nor surprises I cared about. 5. The religious aspect of it is soooo Christian I want to punch him next time he comes to Berlin and scream at him to wake up. 6. The main character dies in the 3rd act of the 3rd book but then comes back to life. I hate this so much! If you kill an important character, please let them die! don't wake them up to please me!!!
Pffff.... I hope the next era will be better... We will have to wait a long time though.
Verdict: 1.5 / 5 ★ - Disappointing.
