Train to Busan - (2016)

Director: Yeon Sang-ho.

I've heard so many positive reviews about this film, I was sure it's going to be a masterpiece. I was very disappointed...

Train to Busan is just another zombie movie. It doesn't bring anything new to the genre and the whole film is very predictable - if you're familiar with zombie survival movies.

Granted, it's well made and they casted Gong Yoo and Jung Yu-mi. The child is also giving a good performance. But if this film was exactly as it is but set in America, nobody would have cared to watch it. We have seen it too many times before.

The only reason it receives so many good reviews is because of the "oh look, a Hollywood blockbuster made somewhere else!" Reaction.

We should stop promoting oriental-Hollywood-copycats in big film festivals in Europe and America. It's even worse than tokenism, it's a direct colonial influence on the market, industry and culture!

People told to me recently I have strong opinions.

- Is it bad?

- Do you want me to shut up and tokenize my Queer-Jewishness?

I am going to watch a lot of Korean films soon, both for research for my new film and to prepare before visiting Seoul soon. Please give me recommendations! (Violence, tragedy, camp, comedy)

Verdict: 2.5 / 5 ★ - Well made, but just a generic zombie movie.
