Secret Sunshine - (2007)

Amir Steklov

Director: Lee Chang-dong.

"Secret Sunshine" is a brutal and heart-breaking tragedy that offers a lot of social commentary and criticism of the powerful Christian church in Korea. Jeon Do-yeon delivers a nuanced and rich performance in a very difficult role, creating one of the best portrayals of grief and anxiety I've seen on the silver screen. Song Kang-ho delivers a fantastic performance, as always, playing his usual character seen in many other films.

I particularly appreciate the platonic relationship, love, and care shown by Song's character. It's rare to see this in cinema, and it gives a balance of optimism in a very sad story.

This film shook me to the core, and I highly recommend watching it.

Verdict: 5 / 5 ★ - outstanding.
