Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone - (2007)

Director: Hideaki Anno.

A nostalgic recap of the TV series.

I enjoyed watching it a very much!

I think the exposition (like in the 1st episode of the TV show) is brilliant, original and fun. I wish more films would do a rushed-up exposition like that: starting the film with a plot point.

I think because it tries to follow the TV series, it's inevitably rushed-up and there is not enough time for character development. Thus, I would not recommend it to someone who's not familiar with the series.

What I didn't like, as a more mature person today, is the narrative of the privileged boy who is doomed to do great things because his father is a great man.

Like Dune, this film also tries to show how being born into privilege takes a toll on one's freedom. I don't buy it! I think it's bullshit and it's a narrative that privileged people are promoting about themselves because they have the power to do so.

I, a product abuse, colonialism, and corruption can not related to a narrative like that.

Another thing that I liked, is the representation of teenage sexuality and nudity. I think it's healthy to talk about those topics in a film that is aim mostly towards teenaged boys.

Verdict: 3.5 / 5 ★ - Fun.
